At Opera Colorado, we believe almost everything is better with music, and Halloween might be the best proof.
Would your favorite spooky movie be nearly as spooky without its soundtrack? Would a Halloween party feel the same without “Monster Mash”? And what’s a dramatic costume entrance without a little dramatic music?
This October, add a little more music to your family’s spooky season with five easy ideas.
1. Build Your Family’s Halloween Playlist
Each family member gets to add a few songs…spooky classics, movie themes, dance favorites, or anything that makes them want to move. Then turn it up and have a pre-Halloween costume dance party.
2. Make a Spooky Soundscape
Challenge kids to create the sounds of a haunted house using only things you have at home. Creaking doors. Howling wind. Thunder. Mysterious footsteps. A ghost appearing out of nowhere. Try telling a whole spooky story using only sound!
That’s part of what makes music so powerful: before a character says a word, the music can tell us that something wonderful, or wicked, is about to happen.
3. Give Every Costume a Theme Song
If your costume had a soundtrack, what would it be? A superhero needs entrance music. A witch deserves something mysterious. A dinosaur? We’ll leave that one to your five-year-old. Let everyone choose a song and make their grand entrance.

4. Hear Spooky Music LIVE
Now take all that Halloween music off the speakers and experience it in person.
On Wednesday, October 28, Opera Colorado’s Resident Artists bring the fun to Spirits & Songs, a family Halloween celebration filled with live music, costumes, and seasonal surprises.

It’s a chance for kids to hear incredible voices up close, wear those costumes one more time, and discover that opera doesn’t always mean sitting quietly through a three-hour performance.
And trying something new is easy!
5. Give Trick-or-Treating a Soundtrack
Halloween night gets the grand finale! Put on music while everyone gets into costume. Pick a song for the drive to your trick-or-treating destination. Come home, dump out the candy, and finish the night with one last Halloween dance party.
Because costumes are more fun with music. Candy is more fun with music. And spooky season? Definitely better with music!
